Hello! As you’ve probably seen by now, my name is Drew P. Burks. I am currently a faculty member at the University of North Georgia, where I teach fully virtual courses in the innovative, state-wide eCore program. I am a historian of twentieth-century Central and Eastern Europe, with an emphasis on the late Austro-Hungarian Empire, interwar Poland, and the complicated transnational connections during the interwar period. My recent research examines advertising in the popular daily press as an indicator of social and cultural trends in the cities of Kraków (in present day Poland) and Lwów (present day L’viv, Ukraine) from 1911 to 1921. I am most interested in aspects of everyday life that developed before the war, and how those aspects changed or persisted across the war years and into the turbulent years of the early interwar period.

Working in higher education since completing my MA degree in 2008, I have served as an academic advisor at the University of Texas at Arlington, and the coordinator of programs for students on academic warning and probation at Washburn University in Topeka, Kansas. While student success has always been a passion of mine, after completing my Ph.D. it was my goal to serve as a history faculty member.
From 2019 to 2021 I served on the history faculty at the University of Arkansas – Pulaski Tech, where I taught both World Civilizations and US history and served as a faculty advisor. Since 2021, I have been a faculty member in the eCore program through the University System of Georgia, as mentioned above. Though I am on the faculty of the University of North Georgia, the eCore program serves students across all of the system’s colleges and universities. I also often have the opportunity to teach in the community that I live in, in person.
Recently, I took on the position of Book Review Editor for History, Social Sciences, and Diaspora studies for The Polish Review, a quarterly, peer-reviewed, scholarly journal.

When I am not working, I enjoy traveling, visiting family across Texas, collecting fountain pens, and increasingly, film and digital photography.
